Anyone know of a book that might cover how the bohemian movement and the consumerism co-exist. Im wondering how both can occur at once but with an actual compromise between the factors that conflict.

somethin' brewin' in Reno...

All together now! –––"Are we not men? We are Nada!"

My number one desire is to make a comfy living from the sale of my art. I made these paintings, but I don't wanna keep them. It'd be nice to make a living from doing the thing I'm best at.
I found out years ago that in order to do this, I must involve others in what I'm doing; inevitably, I concluded, they will involve me in what they're doing too. This is what happened in January of '07 as Jeff Johnson, Tova Ramos, Dianna SionCallender, Esther Triggs and Ann O'Lear invited me to join them in the Dada Motel schemes. The thing quickly took off but we've had to work at it and many more people have joined in, helping in their own ways. It's an artist thing and that means nothing in particular, so we're searching to find out what we've got here, who we've got here.
We've got 50 motel rooms filled so far, and it's in Reno; that much we know.
There's this large unique local community of creative types here and our groups compliment each other. If each group focuses its efforts to reinforcing what the other groups are doing/making, we will be able to shout with one loud voice. We're making some noise and calling some attention to our own efforts. This is done better when it's not just us saying "hey look at us", this goes for groups of artists and individual artists alike. We do our part to promote each other and everybody's happy.
I'm lookin' for unity, I'm lookin' for creativity, and mostly I just want everyone to know that this event was wholly created by artists. The artists worked together to bring you this and here we are–luvv us.
We artists types are notoriously known to be loner individuals and iconoclasts. That's o.k. It's just that all of these grunting individualists need to realize the importance of applying our own creativity to promotional efforts. Maybe this is what being an artist is– a lot of grunting and calling attention to ourselves. Whatever works. We gotta' have an audience!
Arts education/appreciation drops at alarming rates in public institutions and the funding dwindles that supports these efforts. You and I both know that art is more than drawing, drumming or crying on cue. Art is in the lives that we lead everyday but not everyone has been so fortunate, they don't understand the benefits. The creative life–itself–is an art compared to the life that most live. We must share our talents/fears/observations/obsessions and bring these 'others' in to our world.
Too many people are waiting for something to happen and are meanwhile making nothing happen. I like to do things the hard way myself, and it's always given me good practice for the easy stuff.
Nada Motel asks a lot from participants as did Dada Motel and that's how it works so well and efficiently.
A fact of life is that 'nothing succeeds without personal sacrifice' and isn't that how it SHOULD be? We do more than is asked of us, and it doesn't go unnoticed–but results are not instant. GIVING is what art does; eventually it has to given back to.
A question to ask our selves is "Why include anyone else in my plans to achieve artistic fame?" And a second question would be "As an artist, do I need fame?"
As we all know, art is not made in a vacuum, successful art involves many people; many people to promote and many people to appreciate. The beautiful thing is that the promoters and the appreciators are the same people, and so it grows.
Finally, as artists, all that we need to know is that people need to see what we make/do.... and there's no better time to show them than NOW!
Hit the press, tell them what's brewin'–make noise, period. Reno is loud, Reno is proud and you don't wanna be left behind!

All together now!

Art Studio Ideas

1) GET A PORTABLE STUDIO – Keep an art journal with you 24/7/365 as it can
be amazingly affective for you and your work. It is a powerful tool to
access your own personal creative space at the drop of a hat! Most of all it
allows you to hit the studio with out having a formal space that you
physically go to, or when you are away from your formal studio. All in all,
the important thing is that it is your space to have and to hold, regardless
of where you are and what you are doing. You can just connect with that
essential part of you that wants to WORK any time, anywhere.

2) CREATE A COMMUNITY SPACE – All over the globe there are spaces available
for rent. Do some research! Find out from who, what, when and where you can
rent out a space. Then take the space and cute it into 4 separate spaces.
You take one space and rent the other 3 out for whatever your expenses are
(rent, heat, electric). This is a totally positive, exciting way to develop
a free space for yourself and support others who are looking for inexpensive
work space and want to be around other like-minded artists! If you present
yourself to the owner of the space in a serious manner with a clear plan and
a commitment to the project he or she might even create the space for you
and keep your start up costs real low.

3) You can TAKE THIS IDEA and build on it all the way to owning your own
building with studios and a gallery, art café and so on… It has been done
all over the world for many years. Just start small, use your creative mind,
and think "space"! Just keep thinking about it until you make it happen! It
does not take money, it takes time, smarts and the willingness to believe!

Compiled from various Craig's List artists:

cterusa@elcidproducts.com -
Why? "THE MOST DIFFICULT, cheapest and conniving person I have ever worked for. She put me through hell and back on a simple POS job similar to what she posted today, making numerous changes (6 changes - because she simply changed her mind), calling me as early as 7am and if I didn’t call her right back she would leave threatening voicemails and emails for me saying she was going to have to find someone else (after I’d already started job). When I told her she was rude and unprofessional, she called me apologizing...A TOTAL NUTCASE!!!
Basically she was difficult from beginning to end and made me wish I had never taken the stupid job. Today she said “the check is in the mail”...but honestly I have a gut feeling not to trust her."

Elisabetta Rogiani – rogiani.com:
Why? "Refused to pay me after authorizing over 30 hours of work. Told me that I couldn't just write up an invoice and expect her to pay it. Will try to renegotiate and low ball you after terms have been agreed to and work has been done. Goes through employees like kleenex because she's super demanding, keeps changing her mind all the time, but doesn't believe that corrections are something she should pay for. Calls at all hours of the day and night, once at 10:30 pm because she was having some sort of computer problem she wanted my help with. Can be insulting and abusive when she doesn't get her way. Had her lawyer send me a threatening letter when I insisted she pay me a $100 balance due! Uses the check in is the mail excuse repeatedly. Mood swings, outbursts, forgetfulness, running around like a chicken with her head cut off...a possible drug problem? Avoid at all costs".

Appledigitalprinting - smelly office, exposure to cleaning fumes, micromanagement, payment issues

Okay, first off....Im not the best at expressing myself these days so hopefully this intro doesnt come out as some garbled mess of words and scattered thoughts. I used to be better at this kind of stuff.

Looking at this group, I see the idea of empowerment as my goal. I used to be alot more empowered about expressing my art (showing it on websites, showing others in person) despite all the corporate/consumer BS that seems to be taking the art world and turning it upside down, killing it softly. These days, I cannot.. 2007 was just a tumultious year and alot of incidents happened at once. The timing was everything and I think that is why things hit me so hard.

Im slowly getting comfortable with at least blogging again. Even though it is stuff that is just "today I went to the store and..." or "I had one of the funniest things happen to me today....", its progress for someone that got hit so hard emotionally and spiritually that she didnt want to talk to anyone or show anything about herself to anyone.

Im not sure where to go from here honestly. My friend was so worried that he purchased "The Artists Way.." and the "Morning Pages" for me. Its a bit intimidating to me. Also, reading too many books in an effort to help pretty much gives me 2 views that do not match with one another and seems to just confuse me more.

Any idea if this group is what might help me? If not, apologies for being off topic to the tribe. If anyone does know of a tribe on here that better works for the emotional/spiritual healing of someone in my shoes, please let me know. Thanks.
Call for Art, Art Outside 2008, Austin TX

Calling ALL Artists For The 4th Annual Art Outside Brouhaha! March 6th – 16th 2008.
To take part in AO|08 Go Here- http://www.artoutside.org/

Ladies and gentlemen of the art world, we are seeking any and all creative humans who use their skill and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others. That is, we are looking for those whose life is art, and everything they do is DIY. We are searching for those who are creating the Hand-Made Nation. We are calling !ALL! make-believers, dreamers and reality re-arrangers. We are searching hi and low for lowbrow-urban-contemporary-pop-surrealism, pop art, op art, hard-edge, lyrical abstraction, post minimalism, which might be interpreted by some to mean that we are looking only for painters, but that is most definitely not the case. For you see, of course, we need masters of typography, sketchers, illustrators, satirical stencilers, screen printing is way cool, and yes, you too, graffiti fools. Least we forget every culture jammer in the hood. Do you manipulate earth/land/sand/plants/junk into art? Then we have a home for you.

Now, we know some of you may be thinking “What about Dadas’ Dadaists, though?” To this we say, but of course we are calling all inspired by DADA- for where would art be without fluxists, productivism, neoplasticism, pittura, metafisica, arbeitsrat and bauhaus. Well, we are looking for all of “you” from then and now, if any of you still are around. And one may wonder… What about the cubists? We say, “But of course.” Conceptualists? Indeed. Installationists? Please! One might ask if we are seeking anything that might fall under postmodernist modernist who are not distracted by abstractionists and other IST’S. Of course there is always impressionism, post-minimalism, pre-contemporaryism, and expressionism. Are you working in symbolism or surrealism or any of the other -isms that we have not yet mentioned? Well come on out. But wait that’s not all, that could not possibly be all this call for ARTE is all about? Well, Dali you’re right,

This call goes out to all kinetic sculptors, fire sculptors, sound artists bending invisible waves, and video projectionists playing with light. We must invite the minds of the poets and their spoken slam voices, along with improv comedians who mimic the true history of time. Or was that the klown? How can we forget about the klowns! Mimes? Performers “performing” art, puppeteers with their puppets, musicians making sounds. Oh, and least we forget outsider artists wanting to be outside.

In short, we invite all the conceivable movements, modes, and theories of art known to wo/man kind. We say to you, the Artisans of the world who wish to unite because the world needs ART, because the world’s not right. It is time, Your window of opportunity is now. Our space is your blank canvas. Your dreams are our inspiration. You and your art are invited to take part in this epic artistic endeavor.

The world may be going to hell… So let’s make some art.
P.S. If we happened to have forgotten any form of ART in this call for art then we do deeply apologize. Please note that you too are invited.

Where: SF's SOMA District, (1 block away from Yerba Buena Gardens 4 block from Powell BART)
When: TBD
Cost: TBD

Artists, Models, and Other Creatively-Wired Individuals,
We are putting together a group of people interested in honing their life drawing and/or modeling skills.

MODELS:
We value diversity so all types of models are encouraged to join regardless of sex, gender, ethnicity, body type. Ideally we would have a good mix of different kinds of models as well as artists

What we offer is a modern and clean studio (with a bathroom) in safe part of SF 4 blocks away from Powell BART

As of today we have these time slots available:
Mondays: 1:00 PM-3:00 PM
Fridays: 7:30 PM-9:30 PM
Saturdays: 3:30 PM-9:30 PM
Sundays: 11:00 AM-8:00 PM

Ideally we would like to have a sizable group or groups that meet regularly so that we can make it worthwhile for everyone involved.

If you are interested please let me know:
1. If you are a model, artist, or both
2. You schedule preferences

If you know other people that might be interested please pass this along to them. If you have any further questions please contact me at my email or tribe.

Thank You,
Ideas for Contemorary Morality Story/Fine Art Photo Shoot

I need your help - your brainstormed ideas . . .

I am starting to organize a story that is a morality play or sorts for my 6 year old Godson, whom I coparent. It will include a yound man setting off in the world and encountering archetypal beings and situations that engage him and end up teaching him somthing essential about living a fulfilling life. the main character will be discussing these situations and beings with a wise person from time to time. I am an artist. You can see some of my work on my profile pics. I will be doing a photo shoot (B&W infrareds) for every chapter in the story. I will be compiling the story and images into a small, hand bound book. I'l make about 100 editions of the book.

What I need help on is the story:
* What do you think the most important things are to learn and integrate to live a fulfilling life?
* What are the best ways to deal with disapointment and loss, with death?
* What are the most essential archetypal situations that teach us the most about living a fulfilling life?
* What archetypal characters teach us the most about living a connected, passionate, and loving life?
* What situations would you create to teach the main Character the foundations of a connected, passionate, and loving life?

Any ideas will be most appreciated.

~ Daniel

business plan for a job

Aloha thank you for this tribe!

I've been invited to work for a company I've worked for before -- a visionary telecommute position including design, architecture and development work. I'm a digital artist with the ability to hone my perceptions into web ware manifestations, they've seen me do it, they want me back. I worked for them 10 years ago and we made some cool web wares, and I worked for them last year. They want me to do the work with my compounded knowledge of the vision, my past experience doing it, my digital networking abilities and my design and interface skills.

It's a start-up, last year they had me do miscellaneous designing, web mastering, editing and typesetting works which diluted the work they hired me for. The pay was low.

I am interested in working with them but would like to approach with a business plan and negotiations for my work. I am shy with verbal face-to-face contacts, but good with written words. I feel I can sculpt my passion for art, and web ware creation for this position's highest good. Does anyone have a business plan, formula or suggestions on how to mold this position into a job worthy of my talents?

Thanks ahead.

Scam or Missed Opportunity?

Here's a question for the artists, curators, etc.:

What are your thoughts on artists paying for representation?

I was approached by a "gallery" in the UK with a slick web site asking if they could represent me. I checked out their site and submission forms and realized that they charge a pretty penny for exhibition space and/or representation, and promptly lost interest.

Yesterday they contacted me again saying they had interested buyers and that I should ship 50+ paintings to them right away. When I replied I thanked them for their interest, but said that I do not pay for representation, and that if they would be willing to waive their fees, help pay for shipping and send me a contract to review that I would reconsider. They promptly sent me a rather rude letter stating that clearly I am a difficult artist to work with, insinuating that I was being unprofessional, and revoking their interest.

What are your thoughts: Am I too jaded, or are these potential scam artists?

Good day, my name is Leah Wilson, you are the artists, it is a pleasure to meet you. I believe in empowerment (say it with me) I deserve the empowerment, we are the creative force that is currently documenting our cultural history to exhist for the future to embrace as something important, vital, more so now, way more then, feelings, yes feelings folks, we are in the business of feelings up to our eyelashs in feelings. Television has become the big brother puppet master our literature has prophesized, it no longer feeds the people trust in feelings, with toxic shock climaxing, what is left? There is a rise in indipendant film, underground galleries and theatres suddenly have members of support, there is a trend breaking free to liberate the artist into being the successful, healthy, confident being that can en-mass and gather with security of greatness, to be.
I meet many artists who are in a middle ground place, their talents and production is at a high, printing and selling a little, but there is a fear of full contact with the flow. Embrace the flow my friends, feel the prosperity to perpetuate your creative expression, for you are the ones that tell the truth of our time, even with random squiggles tugging on a relative yet distant thought, with feeling it makes the magic.
I double dog dare you to go and make something creative with feeling, and then tell someone about it, write it down, take a photo of it, and intend it with value, if you are selling work for $200, and it has shown in three places, when it shows again, make it $500 and say "so there!" If your work is not moving in Milan, move it to Halifax and add the price of shipping doubled over and say "so there!"
Thanks for listening,
I look forward to any comments and pass it forward text that transpires,
all the best,
Leah.

Does anyone know where I can find a large amount of glossy paper size 8" x 11" or larger that's low-cost or no-cost? I'm very busy with a lot of cartoon projects these days, and I believe using glossy paper could speed up the process.

Government and Corporate Industry Photography and The Wal Mart Mentality

I have worked for corporate industry for over 18 years as a technologist specializing in photographic arts and sciences. This included the Department of Energy, Lockheed Martin, Bectel and even British Nuclear Fuels. I have done everything from high-speed photography, holographic processes, corporate portraits, scientific documentation, environmental documentation, commercial, and public relations for these companies.

But I am here to testify how corporate industry uses artist and photographers and how it has degraded over the years. What started this decline was digital imaging. I know every old school technique there is from RA4, Black & White, Cibachrome, and even the three-color laser inter-neg process. I am heavy into digital now, but this is when things really started going down hill as far as commercial work. It is the same with desktop publishing where every secretary with zero artistic capability with put together a corporate presentation, that has put thousands of graphic artist out of work.

We had the 10th largest in-house commercial photo service lab in the industry for the Department of Energy, with 12 full time photographers. By the time I left, there was only two left. Mainly because every department or person within the company was getting there own digital camera. The company had this point and shoot anyone with a camera mentality to represent the company, projects, and proposals. National Security in controlling images when out the window because of this. And homeland security is nothing but a farce! I have always lived by the philosophy “That the impressions you give on how you do business will have a dramatic effect on how you do business in the future. If Any!

Let face it. Photographers are now a dime a dozen. Only the extremely good and strong are going to survive in the business as it being there main source of income. Stock photography is in the same boat. Everyone wants it for free. Just right click and print.

A few years ago I knew the marketing manager for all the Sears Portrait Studios in their western division. I found out that Both Sears and Wal Mart were losing an average of about 4 to 10 million dollars per year on their portrait studios. When you are selling prints and packages at practically the cost of running the operations, you have to take a look at the big picture. – Wal Mart will spend about 30 to 60 million dollars per day in national advertising. Like ABC, NBC, CBS, radio stations across the nation, and all the mail flyers just to name some examples. But, when they gross 800 million, to 1.8 billion dollars per day, then losing 4 to 10 million per year in their generic shap-shot kiddy booths is nothing more than a penny that has fell out of their pocket. It is the cheapest form of advertisement to lure people into their stores. It may have changed now with faster cheaper image techniques, but this was the way it was before.

Unfortunately this has brainwashed millions of people into thinking that this is professional photography. Let face it! The camera is nailed to the floor, the lights are nailed to the floor, along with the backdrops and it is nothing more than a say cheese and smile snap shot with zero creativity on the photographers part. Very generic portraits! Fine Art portrait studios have a hard time competing with this Wal Mart mentality that it creates, and when they go to real photo studios, they can’t figure out why it cost so much. It is a proven fact. People will go out and spend $200.00 a night for a diner, show, and drinks and have nothing to show for it the next day except a hangover and not even think twice about it. But will cringe at thought of spending the same amount of money on fine art portraiture that will not only last them a lifetime, but for generations to come.

As things stand now, my current freelance art jobs are not working out. The pirate comic seems to be on hold for some reason, and I might not get paid for my Walking Across America work. With that being the case, do you know of any available freelance art jobs? If not, do you know where I can find any? Thanks!

More Whiners pages

I just uploaded more Whiners pages.
http://www.comicspace.com/timelike01/comics.php?action=gallery&comic_id=7333
For those who don't know (and that's most of you), Whiners is a web comic miniseries I creatred that deals with a small group of whiny cats and their human friend as they travel to other universes in search of a world where cat persecution doesn't exist. After all, cat persecution is one of the most prominent and obscene cliches in history. Whiners represents a more creative view of the cat bashing cliche in that it regards that mess as the mess that it is. Very rare in today's modern dystopia.

We need to stand up for creativity...

I just read an article today on the Communication Arts Web site, titled 'The Other Inconvenient Truth,' which speaks about the need to preserve creativity in our society.

I posted the link to this story in another thread having to do with unauthorized copying of artwork, and I thought that this article had so many strong points that it was too good not to share with everyone.

One part that rang so loudly was this:

"We can think cobbling together bits and pieces of other legitimately original works makes us creative all we want, but it’s a delusional concept. Not only is it demotivating to truly creative people, it sends a terrible message. That your original idea is my original idea and as such I have a right to do anything I want with it. Fact: It’s creative people who make the world a better place, not creative leeches."

Here's the link to the story:

I've been hired to do a weekly pirate comic for syndication. That said, I'd like some suggestions regarding episodes and such for the comic. So far, I've got few ideas in that area.

So a friend was injured in a horrific accident with a train last month in Austria.
All we can seemingly do (as friends & supporters) is stand by and watch her condition on her family's blog-

But by using a Call for Art we can be empowered... We can at least, make art, have an auction and try to help.
You are invited if you'd like, or at least you can check out the site:

http://www.chukkasupport.blogspot.com

(click on the art auction link to find out how to submit a piece)

Art Goes Beyond Borders

Hi…I’m new here…hoping to make some friends. My primary interests are at the intersection of environmental stewardship and new media. I’m looking to connect with people about an international touring art exhibition called Common Ground www.commonground2008.com. The theme for each piece in the collection will be about the Environment. Since art uniquely expresses the nature of our world, I believe that cross-cultural art can also help resolve our global environmental issues. We launch our exhibition in Beijing to coincide with the Olympics in 2008, then on to cities in Europe and the Americas in 2009 and 2010. A portion of all the proceeds will go to environmental non-profits. Please check out the Common Ground BLOG, submit a Digital Art entry, join our tribe or just let us know your thoughts on the whole idea by joining my community of friends. Would love to hear from you and support you any way that I can.

Thoughts on UNAUTHORISED COPYING of SHAG and MARK RYDEN art??

OK, it happens all the time I know......but when you start to see the art of your lowbrow/underground favourites being blatantly copied for others profiteering (is that a word?) it really hits a nerve!

Not so long ago I saw dodgy shag coasters at a major local grocery chain down here in Australia....on further inspection I noticed they were mass produced (or should I say mass ripped off) from China. My sister-in-law actually bought a set, unknowingly, because they looked
"kool"......she had never heard of Shag beforeI I later found out Outre gallery here in Oz who represent Shag and Ryden etc. did their best to put a stop to the importation of them!

While searchin for tiki mugs on ebay a few days ago I came across Mark Ryden's piece "Tiki God" being offered as an iron on transfer. On further inspection I realised this was not only an unauthorised item, they hadn't even given the artist any credit! I immediately contacted the seller and explained that it was wrong and a breach of copywright. They replied saying they had purchased the item "unaware"......but the story did'nt wash with me because they also offered an enlarging service and in their "sellers other items" had several more very familiar designs on offer!

Anyway, they basically were not too fazed by my concerns and the item continues to be listed! Ya' see this shit really pisses me off, being an artist myself. I'd like to know your thoughts on this matter of shamefully copying & profiting from others hard work?

to check out this item on ebay.....& send 'em a message if ya don't like what ya see!

KLab9 Call for Contributions

KLab9 Call for Contributions
From KnowledgeLab
KLab9:Art - Technology, Authorship and Ways of Living
A weekend gathering for collaborative and creative reflection. 5th - 7th October, 2007 tbc.
Institute for Advanced Studies, Lancaster University, North West England.

INTRODUCTION

The Knowledge Lab is an attempt to provide a collective space for anti-capitalist reflection. It is located at the margin of the university, an institution essentially geared towards the production of knowledge as a resource for corporate interest and as justification for particular constellations of power relations.
This knowledge lab will address art and ways of critically thinking about our world. Within this broad region of enquiry, the lab will encompass notions of life and art as a political commitment, the influence art can exert in politics and how political ideas in turn influence art. It will also address new ways of making art and how this relates to technologies and social changes, and the use of art as an anti-capitalist means to change and fight the system.

We hope that the knowledge lab will not merely address, but also show that art can initiate critical thinking in the various guises outlined above. Our expectations, in terms of the event, and its outcome, are that this be a sharing of creative ideas and ideas about creativity. We hope that it will draw together people with a common interest in art and alternative ways of living, but working in different fields. From this collective thinking we hope that people will be incited to realize, or make manifest, some of these ways of living and thinking creatively when they leave: We will learn from each other.

STREAMS

Like previous knowledge labs the day will be divided into four streams, each will take place in a separate room.

STREAM 1: TECHNOLOGY Free software, art spaces and interfaces, hardware, DIY and recycling/reusing.

STREAM 2: WAYS OF LIVING This stream concerns process, moment and performance. It is the political stream where we will consider primarily imaginative resistance and artivism, but also touch on debates surrounding gender issues, community and cultural production, and personal/political. We hope to see papers touching on initiatives in direct democracy; the art of changing that system, and the paradigms of inspiration. We would like to discuss how artivism will change society, possibles networks of artivists, ways of action.

STREAM 3: AUTHORSHIP Copy rights, ownership, patenting, and appropriation. (Creative commons, Copyleft,...)

STREAM 4: THE ART MARKET (new ways of) curating, spaces (physical and virtual) to show art, ways of making money: Marketing, the means of production, market forces and anti-market forces, the art market, and art and ethics.

CONTRIBUTIONS

Each day will be split into two parts. On Saturday and Sunday morning papers will be presented in each of the four streams, each lasting 20-30 minutes. Papers will be followed by a brief question period of 10-15 minutes. The afternoon will be divided into discussion periods in each of the four streams. During the weekend there will also be a separate space for workshops and performances.
There are therefore a variety of ways to contribute to the weekend. See below for details:

ACADEMIC PAPERS

The list of streams is not prescriptive, it simply outlines some of the issues we envisage arising given the general themes.

Please also send papers on other themes, these will be gratefully considered.

Submit an abstract of no more than 500 words. In addition please enclose a brief biography. Try to make this, along with your paper, as accessible as possible.

FACILITATED DISCUSSIONS (INVOLVEMENT AND SKILLS SHARING)

If you have an idea for one of the afternoon discussion topics that links in with one of the four streams then send in a your idea and think about one of the two types of involvement below:

If you'd like to take a more pro-active role during the conference, you might want to ADOPT a session - that is, prepare it in advance (suggest questions, main issues, reading material etc and propose the length of the session), arrive prepared for discussion themselves, attend it, and participate passionately in the debates.

We also need people to FACILITATE sessions - ideally a session should NOT be adopted and facilitated by the same person(s). Consider that facilitators are usually best if experienced in their task. Any which way, please get in touch.

== WORKSHOPS, ARTWORKS, AND PERFORMANCES ==

These will broadly tie in with one of the four streams above. Send a proposal [Max: A single side of A4], elaborate on: What your contribution will be e.g. a workshop, a performance, an artwork. How long you envisage it taking. Do you need any equipment or materials? Do you want to limit the number of participants? If so, how many? What do you hope will be born out of this? How do you propose to arrive at this end?

SATURDAY EVENING

DJ and VJ session: Call for DJs and VJs to send in samples so they might come and contribute to an evening of art in many guises. As well as other music, visual, perfomance, etc artist and Artivist.
Nb. Groups are welcome to contribute workshops, materials for display and/or distribution.

INFORMATION

Anybody is welcome to attend the weekend, get involved in the discussions, and take part in the workshops. HOWEVER, YOU NEED TO REGISTER TO ATTEND AS THE EVENT IS LIMITED TO 100 PEOPLE, SO PLEASE GET IN TOUCH: klab9art@googlemail.com

CALL FOR ENTRIES Main exhibition Noorderlicht Photofestival 2007

CALL FOR ENTRIES

Main exhibition Noorderlicht Photofestival 2007

ACT OF FAITH

where religion meets the world

The selection for this year's festival has begun, Noorderlicht welcomes submissions and ideas from all over the world

Visit www.noorderlicht.com for conditions and more information

Deadline for submissions: March 1, 2007

Act of Faith
14th Noorderlicht Photofestival
Location: Groningen, The Netherlands
Period: September 16 through October 28, 2007
Opening: Saturday September 15

In one guise or another, religion currently pervades discussion. In a fire fanned by fear of Islam, resorting to religion has become acceptable in the West too.

Faith is back with a vengeance - as a source of certainty and stability, a safe haven, a refuge with its own norms and values, closely connected with the idea of a closed society that is based on tradition and brotherhood.
But what happens when this faith comes in contact with the surrounding world, an open society that is continually changing, based as it is on dialogue among various opinions? Ultimately the separation of church and state is one of the basic principles of Western society, and a globalized world, with its free exchange of goods and ideas, is a source of heresy.

God and Allah, the Vatican and Washington, holy scripture and law books, global and local, love and resentment: The Noorderlicht Photofestival 2007 investigates what happens when faith meets the world around it, where the collisions of different value systems lead to friction.

Act of Faith is an international group exhibition that will be accompanied by a special catalogue. Previous main exhibitions of the festival have drawn enthusiastic responses and are now touring all over the world.

Submissions can be sent directly to the curator: wim@noorderlicht.com

4th annual

you are cordially invited to attend
the Cheshire Rock Opera
on the evening of 1-27-2007
this is an annual celebration of
Lewis Carroll, his works &
his effect on popular music.
please attend as one of the
characters from wonderland.
bring tea & cakes to share
& bottles marked "drink me".
a song book & album will be
available to interested parties.
those attending may be asked
for a modest donation:
$5 for those in costume & character
$10 for those simply in costume
& $20 for those who can't
be bothered to dress the part.
the event goes from around 8 untill...

first show was january 27 2004@ Van Kleef's in Oakland.
It was quite a production inluding the queen's concert,
tea party trio, suitcase puppet show of walrus & carpenter
and the jabberwock monstermasks. twas a mad evening
of fun.
the next was a one man show for an intimate audience
of close friends.
it's third year running was the mad tea party with a book
& c.d. to accompany.
the 4th year is set to be in co-operation with
the lucid dream lounge.
this is the culmination of a lifetimes connection to
the writings of Lewis Caroll,
here was my original Idea :I'ts a glam rock opera,
Spacey sci-fi, I like ziggy style, and kabuki japanese
cats, bunraku, noh theatre. this is a description of
a young lewis caroll, in some fanciful asian opium den,
being served and having the hallucination that he
watered down to create alice's adventures in
wonderland. focusing on the bestiary of "Jabberwok"
, the white rabbit, the tea party, and a god-like
presence of the cheshire (cat).
seeking performers, puppet craft, and hosts for
this would bee epic of psychedelic performance art.
follow thee white rabbit...
the set so far
red queen (an original)
white rabbit(+new verses)
the walrus & the carpenter (to music)
I am the walrus (mutant version)
the humpty dump (mix of humpty dance with parts
of eggman & the original poem)
jabberwocky(grunge version)
to all tomorrows parties
the inverse set also features some surprizes from
the collective of songwriters (the likes of the hobo gobbelins,
sourmash hug band & accordion plague)

ttp://Cheshire-rockopera.tribe.net

AT THE START OF THE SHOW:
white rabbit makes an appearance & then takes us
"through the rabbit hole". when we hit the bottom
a red queen appears: I'm bored to tears with the likes
of you! I declare that there shall be a concert to
amuse me & my royal court."
at this point a page begins calling forth the appointed
acts,
***still looking for quick cabaret style performances
(2-3 songs) which can work with a wonderland style

when it comes time for the hatter to sing,
he does so off key & tempo, so badly that the
queen shouts: "stop him! he's murdering time!!!"
and a guard roughly ejects the hatter from the "stage".
perhaps a bit of mumbling as the court complains
of the hatter's ruination of the concert.
focus shifts to the tea party set.
mad hatter: Oh bugger! they've broken my watch!
march hare: let me see that watch hatter.
(smears it with a thick layer of butter)
that should do the trick.
hatter: (shakes watch & listens) nope, it's still broken
now, we'll be stuck in tea time forever.
dormouse: play us a song hatter, to help us pass the time
hatter plays white rabbit....
One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice, when she's ten feet tall

/ F# - / G - / F# - / G - / A CD A - /

And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall
Tell 'em a hookah-smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call
Call Alice when she was just small

When the men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low
Go ask Alice, I think she'll know

/ E - / A - / E - / A - / F# - - - /

When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's off with her head
Remember what the dormouse said
Feed your head, feed your head

/ F# - / G - / F# - / G - / A CD A - / E A E A /

at the conclusion of the song the dormouse says
"feed your head"
hare: what'd he say?
hatter: I don't know, I can't remember.
mouse: feed your head!
hatter: well then, what ever are we to feed it?
hare: I've got an idea, let's feed it treacol
alice: where ever shall we find treacol?
hatter: why, at the bottom of a well, of course
another cup of tea?
alice: but if we were to fall down the well,
however should we get back out again?
hare: we shan't be able to get out, we'd be
stuck down there for the rest of time with
nothing but treacol to eat, pass the crumpets
alice: but if the moon could only see
down in the well, I'm certain she...
mouse:...would be so sad that she would cry
an clouds blot out the starry sky
alice: fill the well up with the rain
so we could get back out again!
hatter:..and float down to a salty sea...
hare: where maybe we could look & see
hatter: a bite of something good to eat
hare: a tasty dish!
hatter & hare together: A FISHY TREAT!!
at this point a mock turtle comes in with
a taureen of hot green soup, followed by a
gryphon.
hatter: I say there, mock turtle what's that
you've got?
mock: it is a most beautiful soup! try some
(ladles some into tiny cups passing some to the party)
hatter:delicious!
as the band strikes up the beautiful soup song
the soup service continues.

Beautiful Soup
c g
Beautiful Soup, so rich and green,
c
Waiting in a hot tureen!
f c
Who for such dainties would not stoop?
c g
Soup of the evening, beautiful Soup!
c g
Beau--ootiful Soo-oop! Beau--ootiful Soo-oop!
c f
Soo--oop of the e--e--evening,
c g
Beautiful, beautiful Soup!
f c
Beautiful Soup! Who cares for fish,
g c
Game, or any other dish?
c g
Who would not give all else for two
g c
Pennyworth only of Beautiful Soup?
g c
Pennyworth only of beautiful Soup?
f c g c
Beau--ootiful Soo-oop! Beau--ootiful Soo-oop!
c g c
Beautiful, beauti--FUL SOUP!

at the end of the song,
hatter asks: I say, mock turtle, did you bring any
lobsters with you?
mock: no, (sadly) but they sent this message
(hands card to hatter)
hatter: (reading from card)
"dear sir
we thank you kindly for your invitation to the
cheshire rock opera, however we are already
engaged to attend the lobster quadrille.
best wishes,
the lobsters"
... ah, the lobster quadrille, what a lovely song
and dance!"
mock: (disagreeably) I always thought it was very sad
hatter: no, I assure you it is a delightful little tune,
listen to the way we play it.
(during the tune mock turtle moves to the dance floor
& a group of alices dance around and with her.
The Lobster Quadrille
interlude=g//f//a//d//x4
g f a d
"Will you walk a little faster?" said a whiting to a snail.
g f a
d
"There's a porpoise close behind us, and he's treading on my tail.
g f a d
See how eagerly the lobsters and the turtles all advance!
g f a
d
They are waiting on the shingle - will you come and join the dance?
d f d g d f
g f
Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, will you join the dance?
d f d g d f
d
Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, won't you join the dance?

g f a d
"You can really have no notion how delightful it will be
g f a
d
When they take us up and throw us, with the lobsters, out to sea!"
g f a
d
But the snail replied "Too far, too far!" and gave a look askance -
g f a
d
Said he thanked the whiting kindly, but he would not join the dance.
d f d g d
f d g
Would not, could not, would not, could not, would not join the dance.
d f d g d
f d
Would not, could not, would not, could not, could not join the dance.

d f d f d f d f
"What matters it how far we go?" his scaly friend replied.
d f d f d f d g
"There is another shore, you know, upon the other side.
d f d f d f d f
The further off from England the nearer is to France -
d f d f d f
d
Then turn not pale, beloved snail, but come and join the dance.
d f d g d f
d f
Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, will you join the dance?
d f d g d f
d
Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, won't you join the dance?"

at the end of the song, mock turtle returns to the
table, with a worried look on his face
mock: that's all well & good, but I don't really undestand
can you play it again?
hatter: but of course
instead they play "the voice of the lobster"
'Tis the Voice of the Lobster
Cm
'Tis the voice of the Lobster: I heard him declare
Fm
"You have baked me too brown, I must sugar my hair."
Cm
As a duck with its eyelids, so he with his nose
D G
Trims his belt and buttons, and turns out his toes.
Cm
When the sands are all dry, he is gay as a lark
Fm
And will talk in contemptuous tones of the Shark:
Cm
But, when the tide rises and sharks are around,
D G ~~~
His voice has a timid and tremulous sound.

I passed by his garden, and marked with one eye,
How the Owl and Panther were sharing a pie:
The Panther took pie-crust, and gravy and meat,
While the Owl had the dish as its share of the treat.
When the pie was all finished, the Owl as a boon,
Was kindly permitted to pocket the spoon:
While the Panther received knife and fork with a growl,
And concluded the banquet by--

on the last note of the song a tuft of feathers is
thrown in the air.
mock: I don't see what the point is of repeating
all this stuff over & over, if you aren't going to
take the time to explain it.
hatter: I tell you what, mock turtle, I've got a box here
which is sure to explain everything.
puts the box on the table & thus is the set up for
walrus & the carpenter
The Walrus and The Carpenter
Lewis Carroll
(from Through the Looking-Glass and
What Alice Found There, 1872)
the verses shall be noted as such
first verse noted is v1, & 2nd is v2
thus follows
Em Am
The sun was shining on the sea,
B7 Em
Shining with all his might:
Em Am
He did his very best to make
B7 Em
The billows smooth and bright--
B7 Em
And this was odd, because it was
B7 Em
The middle of the night.

The moon was shining sulkily,
Because she thought the sun
Had got no business to be there
After the day was done--
"It's very rude of him," she said,
"To come and spoil the fun!"
B7 Em
The sea was wet as wet could be,
B7 Em
The sands were dry as dry.
B7 Em
You could not see a cloud, because
B7 Em
No cloud was in the sky:
Em Am
No birds were flying overhead--
B7 Em
There were no birds to fly.
v1
The Walrus and the Carpenter
Were walking close at hand;
They wept like anything to see
Such quantities of sand:
"If this were only cleared away,"
They said, "it would be grand!"
v2
"If seven maids with seven mops
Swept it for half a year.
Do you suppose," the Walrus said,
"That they could get it clear?"
"I doubt it," said the Carpenter,
And shed a bitter tear.
v1
"O Oysters, come and walk with us!"
The Walrus did beseech.
"A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk,
Along the briny beach:
We cannot do with more than four,
To give a hand to each."
v2
The eldest Oyster looked at him,
But never a word he said:
The eldest Oyster winked his eye,
And shook his heavy head--
Meaning to say he did not choose
To leave the oyster-bed.
v1
But four young Oysters hurried up,
All eager for the treat:
Their coats were brushed, their faces washed,
Their shoes were clean and neat--
And this was odd, because, you know,
They hadn't any feet.
v2
Four other Oysters followed them,
And yet another four;
And thick and fast they came at last,
And more, and more, and more--
All hopping through the frothy waves,
And scrambling to the shore.
v1
The Walrus and the Carpenter
Walked on a mile or so,
And then they rested on a rock
Conveniently low:
And all the little Oysters stood
And waited in a row.
~~~~~~~
v1
"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--
Of cabbages--and kings--
And why the sea is boiling hot--
And whether pigs have wings."
~~~~~
v1 (or2)
"But wait a bit," the Oysters cried,
"Before we have our chat;
For some of us are out of breath,
And all of us are fat!"
"No hurry!" said the Carpenter.
They thanked him much for that.
v1
"A loaf of bread," the Walrus said,
"Is what we chiefly need:
Pepper and vinegar besides
Are very good indeed--
Now if you're ready, Oysters dear,
We can begin to feed."
v2 (or1)
"But not on us!" the Oysters cried,
Turning a little blue.
"After such kindness, that would be
A dismal thing to do!"
"The night is fine," the Walrus said.
"Do you admire the view?
v2 (or1)
"It was so kind of you to come!
And you are very nice!"
The Carpenter said nothing but
"Cut us another slice:
I wish you were not quite so deaf--
I've had to ask you twice!"
v2(or1)
"It seems a shame," the Walrus said,
"To play them such a trick,
After we've brought them out so far,
And made them trot so quick!"
The Carpenter said nothing but
"The butter's spread too thick!"
v2
"I weep for you," the Walrus said:
"I deeply sympathize."
With sobs and tears he sorted out
Those of the largest size,
Holding his pocket-handkerchief
Before his streaming eyes.
v1
"O Oysters," said the Carpenter,
"You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?'
But answer came there none--
And this was scarcely odd, because
They'd eaten every one.

during the last verses of the song trays of hors devors
(smoked oyster on a slice of french bread with a dash
of pepper & vinegar) are passed around.

I Am the Walrus

I am he
As you are he
As you are me
And we are all together.
at the end of the song...

humpty: hello every body, since we've been

Commander-in-Thief…

Who would have thought that the very person who should be defending our right to copyright would be a violator of it himself? I think he should be punished according to the terms of United States Copyright Law. What do you think? If he is re-elected, what will he take next? Our artwork?

I've posted the story below, because Associated Press has a habit of pulling stories shortly after they are published online, especially if they have anything to do with making our Commander-in-Thief look bad.

Here's the text:

Oct 29, 12:21 PM EDT

Bush Asked to Stop Using 'Still the One'

By DEVLIN BARRETT
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The songwriter who helped pen the 1970s hit, "Still the One," is demanding that President Bush stop using the tune at campaign events, arguing that he's no fan of the Republican incumbent and the campaign never got permission to use the song.

John Hall, a former Democratic county legislator in upstate New York, co-wrote "Still the One" and recorded it with his band Orleans in 1976. The cheery pop tune was played at Bush events Thursday and again Friday to open and close a rally for the president in New Hampshire.

"I was watching TV, and there all of a sudden was my song, my guitar playing, my voice coming out of the speakers," said the 56-year-old Hall, still a working musician.

Hall wrote "Still the One" with his then-wife, Johanna D. Hall. The two as well as surviving members of the band are supporters of Democratic Sen. John Kerry and don't want their work used to promote Bush's re-election, Hall said.

"I'm not just some guy that's stoned out and happened to write a song, and even if I were, it would still be a problem, because you should always ask permission to use the work," Hall said.

Hall's lawyers are drafting a formal letter of complaint to the Bush campaign. A spokesman for the Republican did not immediately return calls for comment.

"If you have protectable copyrights to a song and someone is using it without permission, and especially if they know they're using it without permission, there is some sort of legal liability there and it may be that they could be required to pay royalties at the very least," said Daniel Healy, an intellectual property lawyer at the firm Anderson, Kill & Olick.

Among Hall's concerns is that political use of the song could hurt its commercial appeal, scaring away advertisers. "Still the One" has been used by Appleby's, Burger King and the ABC network, according to Hall.

Hall, who lives in Dutchess County about 90 miles north of New York City, said his band recently declined an offer of $10,000 to perform at a fund-raiser for Maryland Republicans.

This is from my first blog:
Hello, I am late to coming to this myspace thing.

However I have a utube video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMS3gAuGwqU

What I am looking to do is to build more and more painting videos.

I also just released a video game:

http://www.reflexive.com/index.php?PAGE=game_detail&AID=663

It is called Maui and the Big Fish.

It can be found on trygames.com, bigfishgames.com, reflexive.com, msn zone soon, oberon games, and soon possibly arcadetown.com.

I also just upgraded my store at:

http://www.cafepress.com/moran784

Finally I have sketchbook work. I am always looking to add more people to my collection so any volunteers are welcome.

http://moran784.com/sketchbooks/sketches.htm

In general my website is either http://morangallery.com or http://morangallery.com.

I am trying to catch up with all these new, blogs, forums, utubes, myspaces, tribe, and orgainize it all together.

If you recently accepted a friend invitation of mine, I appreciate it. I am still relatively new to the east coast.

I would like to invite you all to my next big show, and if any of you all have events I would always appreciate an invitation.

I don't think I will be a blogger per say, but I will post something now and again.

Best wishes,

Patrick

My new website is finally finished.
If you have a chance to check it out, please let me know how it functions in your browser.
We are still working out the bugs and would appreciate any feedback you can give us.
I designed the site in photoshop, but my husband Ilia made it work. It was a big learning
experience for me. I’m just happy to have some new work up, and a better website.
Here is the link: http://www.dreamloka.com/

Marilyn Manson was wrong

I remember Marilyn Manson once claimed that the (s)election of G.W. Bush would be a good thing in that it would compel creative people to be even more creative as a backlash to the increasing conservative influence. Now five years later, Manson has been proven wrong -- at least according to my observations. We live in a done-to-death dystopia where old ideas are cherished and new ideas are hated. If half the shows on TV are "reality" shows and half the movies at the theaters are remakes of old TV shows, then that demostrates how creativity has suffered as opposed to improve. Even the small press has become less creative over the years. Most of the zines presented in review zines (the ones I know of anyway) are either perzines or music zines. If you do a zine that's experimental and atypical, it very likely will be dismissed by reviewers -- as if zines must adhere to a limited number of criteria.

Yup! Marilyn Manson was wrong, creativity is suffering, and I'm pissed off over that. Of course you may disagree agree with me on this, and that's your right. Even so, I challenge you to change my mind on this matter.
